AEPAC statement on the UNHRC Special Session

This special session must set out to address the crimes committed by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia. Following the Ethiopian Government’s unilateral ceasefire in June 2021, the TPLF have waged a relentless war against the people in Afar and Amhara. In the past month alone, reports by HRW and Amnesty International have detailed killings, gang rape and widespread looting of humanitarian aid by TPLF rebels.

We welcomed the report by the UNHRC and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission published last month which examined abuses committed between November 2020 and June 2021. But the past five months has seen the TPLF as the sole aggressor and it is time to properly investigate the pain and hurt they have inflicted on the people Ethiopia specially those residing in Tigray, Afar and Amhara.
